Disability Rights South Dakota (DRSD) seeks an experienced Executive Director to lead a dynamic advocacy organization to oversee all operations, functions, and activities of the agency. Founded in 1977, Disability Rights South Dakota is the gubernatorially designated protection and advocacy system on behalf of individuals with disabilities. DRSD is a non-profit agency with headquarters in Pierre and satellite offices in Sioux Falls and Rapid City. The Executive Director is responsible for planning, implementing, and executing a system of services to meet the advocacy needs of the disability community. The successful candidate will have the ability to lead, plan, motivate and communicate with the staff to achieve the goals of the agency. The goal is to manage and lead the organization towards the realization of its mission, while working cooperatively and collaboratively with staff, Board of Directors, the disability community, and outside agencies.

The successful candidate must be self-motivated and will have the ability to think, have excellent writing skills, have knowledge of Microsoft office programs and other related computer skills, be competent in technical research and communicate effectively with people with disabilities, family members, providers, and outside agencies. This individual will work with state agencies, national partners, and the South Dakota legislature. Should have sensitivity to community and political concerns as well as public and media relations.

The incumbent should have knowledge of state laws, programs, and issues concerning persons with disabilities. Although not a requirement, a legal background is desired and at the minimum a four-year degree with five to seven years of experience in management.

The position is in Pierre, the Capitol city of South Dakota, travel will be required. The Pierre/Ft. Pierre is nestled on the banks of the Missouri River, it is a hunting, fishing, hiking, boating paradise. Both Pierre and Ft. Pierre have a excellent school systems that offer an array of extra-curricular activities for students.

Disability Rights offers a generous benefit package including annual and sick leave, 403(b) retirement plans; health insurance, short and long-term disability insurance, longevity pay, paid holidays, and professional development. 

Closing date to apply: 5 PM on December 15, 2021 

Salary: $80,000-$110,000 commensurate with experience

Target start date: late March, early April 2022
