TBI Brochure ThumbnailAccording to the Centers for Disease Control, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is “a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain.” In 2010, more than 2.5 million TBIs occurred. In the state of South Dakota alone in 2004-2010, 69.47 deaths per 100,000 people died from a TBI; however, there are many more individuals who sustain a TBI and live that may require additional care throughout their lives. TBIs can range in severity from “mild” to “severe” and affect any age level. No matter the cause of the injury or age of the injured, there are many national and local organizations that can assist people who have a TBI. This guide will review the resources that are available in South Dakota.
